When you have colored hair, you have to focus on taking care of your hair to keep it healthy and moisturized to keep it looking fresh and not dull.  Francesca Rapolla, an expert from Unilever's research and development team, provided important input on this matter.

"The best way to treat colored hair is to use special products that understand your hair needs," she says.

There are some basic things you need to understand and master when it comes to colored hair care, whether you're trying an extreme blonde or darker, more subtle colors.  Read the full guide on how to care for colored hair below.

When is the Right Time to Wash Your Hair?

Washing your hair at the salon after coloring is enough, so you don't have to wash it again when you get home.

"There's no set rule that dictates when you should wait to wash your hair after coloring your hair."  Francesca said.

In contrast to hair smoothing, which usually prohibits shampooing for a few days after treatment.

How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

If this is your first time coloring your hair, you will need to change your shampooing schedule a bit to avoid overwashing or over-washing.  If you usually wash your hair every day, after coloring your hair you need to change that habit.

The new color in your hair will fade every time you wash it.  Based on the editor's personal experience, hair color will fade to 50% of its original color after 10-12 shampoos.  So ideally, you can try shampooing every 2-3 days.

How about bleaching?  Do we still have to wash our hair before doing this procedure?  If you bleach the hair roots then the answer is no.  Natural oils on the scalp can actually protect the hair during the bleaching process.

Whatever hair color you choose, you need to pay attention to the condition of your hair afterwards to understand the right color hair care.  On dry hair, excessive shampooing can not only make the color fade but also make the hair drier.

Thin and oily hair may need to be washed more often to avoid the build-up of oil that can make hair limp and flat.

What are the recommended shampoos and conditioners for colored hair?

Colored hair is often drier than uncolored hair.  This will be felt immediately when you wet your hair.

Do you feel your hair sticking together and difficult to comb with your fingers?  This is because the cuticles of the hair are exposed and even eroded when the hair is colored.  For that, you need a shampoo and conditioner that suits your hair problem.

Washing with Hot or Cold Water?

The bad news is that hot water is not the best friend of colored hair.  According to Francesca, “Hot water can open the hair cuticle and fade the color inside the hair shaft.”

On the other hand, cold water can help lock the cuticles so the color can stick together longer.  You can remember these tips as part of long-term color hair care.

Is Shampooing Just Enough?

The chemicals in hair dye can make hair dry and rough.  As a result, the hair will be more difficult to manage and expand easily.  Coloring hair every day is not the right choice.

Adding extra nutrients and moisture is one way to treat colored hair that you can easily do.  You can add hair vitamins after shampooing.

Another option is to wear natural masks on a regular basis.  No need to buy, we have recipes for hair masks from natural ingredients that you can make yourself at home.

Are There Habits To Change After Coloring Your Hair?

Exist.  In addition to limiting the frequency of shampooing too often and hot water, the sun, swimming pools, and the heat of styling tools are three big sins for colored hair.

If you plan to spend a long time outdoors, make sure your hair is protected from the sun.  For example, with a hat or trying different styles of hair accessories with a scarf.

In second place is chlorine, which is commonly found in swimming pool water, which has the potential to make hair dry.  The solution, wash your hair immediately after swimming.  If necessary, replace your regular conditioner with one that is deep conditioning or detoxifying.

Last but not least, its potential damage is the hot temperature of styling tools, such as a straightener, curling wand, or hair dryer.  One of Pevita Pearce's tricks to reduce the use of styling tools is to use hair rollers.

However, if you are someone who often uses these three tools every day, then heat protection spray is a must-have product on your dressing table.

How to Treat Hair Damaged Due to Coloring?

It is inevitable that the hair becomes drier and branched.  Don't be surprised if the ends of your hair become drier, even split ends!  Well, split ends cannot be cured but must be removed.

Schedule a haircut at least every 6 weeks (trim the ends only).  You must do this if your hair is bleached.  In the meantime, forget about the intention to grow hair!

When Can You Go Back To Coloring Your Hair?

It's a good idea to give a gap of about 3 months if you want to recolor or change hair color.  This is to ensure that your hair is not dry when colored.  Dry hair will make it difficult for color pigment to enter.

This break will give you a chance to treat the damaged hair shaft.
